How Does a Doorknob Lock Work?
How Does a Doorknob Lock Work?
With the hazards that can occur if a child enters a work room containing dangerous chemicals, or a home office that contains furniture with sharp edges or viewing materials not suitable for children, many home owners have used door knob locks to prevent children from entering certain areas of the home.
The basic principle behind a door knob lock is to keep young children out, while still allowing adults and older children to access a room without great strain or effort. Most door knob locks can be placed over the door knob. Simply snap the plastic cap over the door knob and the room is locked. An easy-to-use mechanism allows the cap to lock down over the door knob and prevent it from turning. This will thwart entry into the room. Adults and older children can push the two sides of the cap to release the internal lever responsible for locking the cap in place. When this is done, the door knob will release and the person can enter the room.
Door knob locks vary by style and cost. Some plastic brands can retail for as little as $5 for a set of two. This style is generally best for toddlers and very small children. For older children, a standard door knob lock will work more effectively.
Most door knob locks require a key or code. These locks are generally made of metal and can come with a spring lock and/or deadbolt. A spring lock is a less sophisticated type of hardware. The user must simply press a rounded button at the center of the external side (the side that allows an entrant to enter the room is smooth and rounded; it does not contain a button or lever). That button will then release an internal lever and open the door. As long as the button is pressed inward, the door will remain locked. To release, the button must be pressed once more. Operating off a spring that detaches an internal lever (or hook) holding the door knob in place, the second push will send the lever forward and detach it from the pin.
Door knob locks vary greatly. However, the common considerations when purchasing a lock are whether or not it is spring-loaded (for a spring lock), whether or not it has a single or double cylinder (for a deadbolt). These measures heighten the security of the device, making it either easier or more difficult for a locksmith or burglar to access the pin and push it into place so that the door can be opened.
When dealing with a room inside a home, a simple spring-loaded lock should be sufficient. Outside doors may require additional support against tampering. For example, a deadbolt lock is operated by a cylinder. In order to open a deadbolt, a key, or proper rotation of the cylinder by a professional, is required.
How to Change a Door Lock:
Before moving into a new house, the first thing you should do is change the door locks for all exterior doors. With a little practice and experience you will be able to change locks quickly with little to no problems. Feel safe and secure in your new home knowing you hold the only keys to the doors
Look on the door latch to determine the brand of lock. Purchase the same brand of lock to keep from making any adjustments to the door
Take the measurement of your door's backset. Measure from the latch of the door to the center of the door knob. Standard measurements are 2 3/8 inch to 2 3/4 inch
Remove the screws from the old door lock. Pull each half of the lock out of the door after the screws are removed
Remove the screws from the edge of the door. Remove the old lock
Insert the new lock. Insert the screws into the edge of the door and secure tightly
Put the front and back of the lock back together inside the door. Reinsert the screws and secure them tightly
Tips & Warnings:
If the internal lock pieces are the same brand and size, you do not have to replace them
When replacing the entire lock, glue wooden golf tees into the screw holes on the edge of the door. Snap off the top of the tees and insert the new screws
