How to Clean Poultry Shears:
Poultry shears are scissors that are made from stainless steel. They are specifically designed to cut through chicken bones and tough foods. Poultry shears usually come apart for easy cleaning. The blades are typically curved, serrated and notched for more powerful cutting.
Prepare the wash water in a clean kitchen sink. Turn on the tap water and allow it to run until heated. Plug the kitchen sink with a stopper and add two drops of liquid dish soap. Fill the sink ¼ full with warm water.
Fill the sauce pan half full with warm water. Place the pan on the stove, and heat the water until it boils. Continue with the cleaning process while the water heats up.
If needed, use a screw driver to remove the screw located at the intersection of the poultry shear blades.
Place the shear pieces and screw in the warm soapy water. Gently move the pieces back and forth through the water, allowing the water to wash up against them. Set the pieces on the bottom of the sink, and allow them to sit a full minute before cleaning.
Use a dish cloth to remove all of the food particles from the poultry shear blades and the screw. Inspect the shears closely to ensure that all of the remains have been washed away. Repeat the washing process if any stubborn particles still cling to the shears.
Rinse the soap from the poultry shears with warm running water.
Place the poultry shear pieces into the boiling water and boil for 30 seconds. This sanitizes the shears, effectively removing any bacteria that remained after cleaning.
Turn off the stove, and remove the pan from the burner. Carefully remove the pieces of the poultry shears from the boiling water with tongs.
Dry the poultry shear pieces thoroughly with a clean dish towel or paper towel. Reattach the blades together with the screw.
Tips & Warnings:
Wrap the poultry shears inside a soft cloth to keep the shears protected from accidental breakage.
Always store poultry shears in a safe location to prevent injuries.
